Description

The transport behavior of helium, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen gas and water vapor through (acrylonitrile-vinylacetate) and (acrylonitrile-styrene) copolymer films with various acrylonitrile contents has been studied at 20°C for the gases and at 40°C for water vapor. In addition, X-ray diffraction and solubility of the copolymers were measured in order to clarify the relation between the permeability and the chemical structure of copolymers. The experimental results for the permeability of both the copolymers were not consistent with theoretical calculations. It was found that the characteristic relation between the permeability and copolymer composition could be accounted for by hydrogen bonding, crystallinity, bulkiness, and hydrophilicity of the copolymers.
