Description

Accelerating effect of triallyl trimellitate (TATM) on the radiation-induced crosslinking of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) and the mechanical properties of the crosslinked PVdF have been ivestigated. Gel fraction, swelling ratio, and stress-strain curves at ambient temperature, 100°, 150°, and 180°C were measured. TATM was found to be an efficient sensitizer for radiation-induced crosslinking of PVdF. No appreciable difference in gel fraction was found between 5% and 10% TATM containing PVdF's crosslinked at the same dose. However, swelling ratio and the stress-strain curves exhibited that the crosslinking density increased with TATM content. Noticeable changes in the mechanical properties with dose were increase in the yield strength and decrease in the elongation at break. The effect of crosslinking in the presence of TATM was clearly observed in 100% modulus at 180°C, near the melting temperature of PVdF.
