抄録

Morphology of poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (I) was studied. I was dissolved in sulfuric acid (II) or dimethylformamide (III) containing 3.5% of LiCl. Hexagonal lamellae (or lamellar fragments) of 500-600Å thick and thin lamellae with indefinite shape were formed together with fibrillar structures when II solution was poured into water with stirring. All of these three kinds of structures gave only a diffuse halo in the electron diffraction pattern. It may be concluded that I molecules are packed in pseudo-hexagonal symmetry in the thick lamella, whereas I molecules lie parallel to the surface in the thin lamellae. It was found that fibrillar structures are pulled out from the thick lamellae or from the thin lamellae by necking. Only lamellar fragments were formed when I was precipitated from III solution by dilution with acetone. Water plays an important role in the fibril formation process from the thick lamella.
