Description
Although poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and p-nitroaniline (p-NA) do not individually exhibit any second harmonic generation (SHG) because their centrosymmetric crystal structure, but a mixture of both shows highly efficient SHG activity. This system spontaneously forms an acentric molecular orientation even without the application ofan electric field. A strong SHG could be observed from the sample which contained huge spherulites. In this paper, we report the orientation of SHG active p-NA microcrystal both in the spherulite and as the transcrystal which has been grown by controlled nucleation of the spherulite. The molecular orientation was analyzed by FT-IR spectrum. The order parameter for a transcrystal was quite high compared with that in the poled polymer system. The second order nonlinear coefficient was measured by Maker-fringe method. The d33 of this system was found to be 585 times higher than d11 of quartz.
