Description

General base-catalyzed mechanism has been proposed for the hydroxymethylation of melamine (MH) with formaldehyde (F) in the presence of tertiary amines (triethylenediamine, 3-chloroquinuclidine) -their conjugate acids buffers, since the rate equation contains a second order term with respect to base catalyst as well as the first order term (kB-reaction). According to this mechanism, the complex composed of MH, F and base catalyst (B) is formed (MH+F+B k1→←k-1complexk2→product) as an intermediate, and the ratedetermining step is the k1 step for strong base catalyst, hydroxide ion, whereas the rate-determining step is the k2 step for weaker base catalyst, amine. The above intermediate would be the complex T± ·B, involving the zwitterion T± formed by the reaction of amino group of MH with carbonyl group of F, or the complex T-·HB+ formed by proton transfer.
