Description

Mechanical properties of highly drawn polyethylene fibers produced by a continuous zone-drawing method were studied and related to fiber structure. Young's modulus and tenacity increased linearly with an increase in the drawing stress and also showed a good linear relationship with the amorphous birefringence. The stress-optical coefficient in amorphous phase depended strongly on the drawing temperature; it's value was 0.5 GPa-1 for the fibers drawn at the temperature above 115°C. Linkages of the crystalline blocks will be formed at degrees of crystallinity beyond 77%, and this results in the high Young's modulus. Tenacity was mainly dependent on the degree of crystallinity.
