Effects of catalysts on curing reactions and on the mechanical properties of cured resins were investigated for epoxy-resol type phenolic resin (RE) systems. The curing process consists of two reactions: (a) the reaction between the hydroxyl groups and the epoxide; and (b) condensation reactions of RE. This curing process was changed by a catalyst. When tetraphenylphosphonium-tetraphenylborate (TPP-TPB) was added, both reactions occurred. For 1, 8-diazabicyclo (5, 4, 0) -undecene-7 (DBU), the main curing process involved the reactions between the hydroxyl groups and the epoxide. This difference was due to the difference of affinity between the resin and catalyst. The systems in which the condensation reaction of RE took place underwent an increase in the glass transition temperature and the flexural strength at high temperature.
