The dispersion of γ-Fe2O3 particles and the adsorption of polystyrene (PS) or partially-sulfonic polystyrene (PS-S) on the particles were investigated. The following results were obtained. The γ-Fe2O3 particles did not interact with PS and did not disperse in a benzene solution of the PS. The saturation adsorption of PS-S on γ-Fe2O3 particles and the dispersibility of γ-Fe2O3 in paints and coatings increased, as a content of sulfonic styrene segments in PS-S increased up to 1.0 mol%. Above 1.0 mol% content of sulfonic styrene segments, however, the saturation adsolption of PS-S showed constant value and the dispersibility of γ-e2O3 particles decreased with increase in sulfonic content. These results could be explained by the conformation of the adsorbed PS or PS-S at the solid/liquid and liquid/liquid interface.
