Compressive plastic flow stress in glassy poly (methyl methacrylate) for various temperatures and strain rates was examined in terms of Robertson's structural-temperature theory, which had been shown to be in good agreement with our data of tensile lower yield stress in linear amorphous polymers. It was found that the Robertson equation including the effect of the hydrostatic component of stress could satisfactorily reproduce the experimental structural temperatures obtained at the compressive lower yield points by using the same molecular parameters as used for the tensile lower yield points. Another intensive examination was given to the shear activation volume and the pressure activation volume which were obtained by applying the Eyring equation, including the effect of the hydrostatic pressure, to the lower yield behavior. It was shown that both of the activation volumes could be evaluated as a function of the flow activation enthalpy (or the structural temperature) and that the ratio of the pressure activation volume to the shear activation volume was nearly constant.
