Abstract

Polymer pendant tris (2, 2′-bipyridine) ruthenium (II) type complexes were prepared from the copolymer of 4-vinylpyridine (Vpy) and 4-methyl-4′-vinyl-2, 2′-bipyridine (Vbpy), and from its derivative quaternized with bromoethane. In the reaction of P (Vpy-Vbpy) with cis-Ru (bpy) 2Cl2, the coordination of the Vpy groups occurred at first rapidly, followed by the formation of the [Ru (bpy) 3]2+ type complex by ligand substitution. The photoexcited states of both the polymer pendant complexes ; Ru [P (Vpy-Vbpy)] (bpy) 22+ and Ru [EQ-P (Vpy-Vbpy)] - (bpy) 22+, showed two kinds of lifetime species, the longer lifetime being almost the same as [Ru (bpy) 3]2+ (500-600 ns). The excited state of the Ru [EQ-P (Vpy-Vbpy)] (bpy) 22+ showed remarkably short lifetime of ca. 10ns, which is considered to be due to the heavy atom effect of the bromine.
