Description

We determined the specific volume in solid and liquid of polycarbonate (PC) /poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer alloys as a function of pressure (up to 150 MPa) and temperature (50-250°C) by an isothermal testing method. This was carried out using the plunger type pvT device developed by the authors. The empirical equation of state, the temperature and the mixing ratio dependences of compressibility for amorphous polymer alloys are discussed. This empirical equation of state for amorphous polymers such as PC, PMMA, and its alloys is presented: v (p, T) =v0 (0, T0) + (3Σi=0AiTi+p1Σi=0BiTi+p21Σi=0CiTi). Here v is specific volume as a function of pressure and temperature; v0 is specific volume at atomospheric pressure (p=0) and room temperature (T0). The Ai, Bi, and Ci are coefficients which depend on the pvT characteristic of each polymer. The specific volumes of solid and liquid amorphous polymer alloys determined by the empirical equation agree with the measured values within the error of ±2.5%. The compressibility of amorphous polymer alloys increased with increasing temperature. The value at 250°C become from 8 to 9×10-4 MPa-1. The compressibility of the PC/PMMA polymer alloys having 10-40 wt% PMMA composition is smaller than those of the base polymers: PC and PMMA.
