- Sol-Gel Transition of Poly (butylene succinate) in Organic Solvents

It is well known that poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) is one of the biodegradable polymers. As PBS is crystalline, the polymer in a suitable organic solvent is expected to convert to a thermoreversible gel. In this study, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (χ12) between PBS and solvent was measured as a function of temperature by an inverse gas chromatography (IGC) measurement. The gelation of the PBS/solvent system was discussed from the viewpoint of the magnitude of χ12. The parameter χ12 measured for each PBS/organic solvent system increased slowly with decreasing temperature. The sol-gel transition of PBS solution took place when the parameter χ12 between PBS and solvent became slightly larger than 0.5. In the PBS/solvent system with χ12>>0.5, the liquid/solid phase separation occurred macroscopically and no gelation took place. The microscopic observation showed that many spherulites existed in the PBS gel.
