The graft polymerization of fluoroalkylacrylate (FAA) onto poly (ethylene terephthalate) fiber (PET) was carried out by the treatment of PET by cold plasma (glow discharge), followed by the supply of FAA vapour. FAA reacted in vapour phase with the treated surface of PET, resulting in the graft polymer layer with the thickness of about 100-2, 000Å in the degree of grafting of about 1-5%. Graft polymerization was influenced considerably by air leakage into the equipment. Density (1.1g/cm3) and refractive index (1.2) of the graft polymer were much smaller than the corresponding values (1.7g/cm3 and 1.4) for FAA polymer synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Reflectivity of light for the graft fabric decreased in comparison of the ungrafted fabric, which led to the remarkable improvement in color shade of the fabric. The graft polymer layer played a role of anti-reflection coating to avoid reflection.
