Abstract

For the synthesis of crosslinked polyurethanes, star-shaped functional poly(vinyl ether) polyols were synthesized via living cationic polymerization of various vinyl ethers such as n-butyl vinyl ether (NBVE), 2-methoxyethyl vinyl ether (MOVE), t-butyldimethylsilyloxyethyl vinyl ether (TBSiEVE), and tricyclodecane vinyl ether (TCDVE). The star polymers were treated with 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate to give crosslinked polyurethanes with tunable physical properties and functions; the glass-transition temperature can be adjusted in the range of −37 to 95°C by the used vinyl ethers, while thermoresponsive properties to water are introduced with hydrophilic counterparts.
