Mucormycosis is an acute opportunistic infection caused by a saprophytic fungus found in soil, decaying fruits, and vegetables. Mucormycosis is relatively rarely encountered in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We describe our experience with a patient who hadmucormycosis with maxillary sequestration. A patient who had acute myeloblastic leukemia presented with right cheek edema with mobility of the right upper molars. We diagnosed sinusitis and maxillary osteomyelitis. We performed extraction of 765 and sequestrectomy. Microscopic examination of the sequestrum (×200) revealed numerous nonseptate hyphae of mucormycosis. High doses of antimycotic agents were administered before and after surgery, and the infection was successfully controlled.
