Abstract

As one of the attempts to reduce the energy loss of turbulent flow in the pipe fittings with a branching angle of 90-deg., the pipe fittings with different rounding and chamfering sizes at the up- and downstream edges of the lateral entrance are prepared. The pipe fittings under experiment have three areal ratios and rectangular crosssection. The aspect ratio of the conduit, which denotes a ratio of the depth to the width of the conduit, is common for practical use. The amount of the rounding and chamfering sizes is twenty-seven. The energy loss coefficients for the flow from the main conduit into the lateral conduit and for the straight-through flow and also the power-loss coefficient were measured and discussed. As the results, the energy loss coefficients for the pipe fitting with rounding are, generally, smaller than those with chamfering. Moreover, it is clarified that the energy loss becomes small when the sizes of rounding and chamfering are the same as those of the width of the lateral conduit. The empirical formulae for the energy loss coefficients for the flow from the main conduit into the lateral conduit and for the straight-through flow are decided at the above sizes of rounding and chamfering.
