Abstract

Olfactory adaptation is one of the most important characteristics on sense of smell. In this study, a model of olfactory adaptation is newly proposed. This model is based on some findings in early psycho-physical and physiological works, and is developed on the assumption that olfactory response is proportional to the rate of odorant-receptor combination. The time-course of olfactory response were simulated by using this adaptation model. In results, the time-courses estimated by the simulation, with changing the parameters of this model, could represent some actual experienced phenomena of adaptation and early experimental findings. And a method to control aromatic fragrance in consideration of adaptation, in design of comfortable space by using fragrance, was discussed. In results, it was expected that discontinuous fragrance flow with increasing concentration may be effective. It was made clear that the consideration of this adaptation model was useful to decision of the control method of fragrance.
