Abstract
Vapour pressure decreases and moisture movement gets slower in clothing with an increasing concentration of the main impurity of sweat, namely sodium chloride. Then the evaporation rate of water at the surface of clothing differs from those of pure water. In the previous paper, the simultaneous heat, moisture and salt transfer model was proposed and validated to quantify such influences of salt on the heat and moisture transfer. In this paper, the influence of salt on the hygrothermal properties of clothing (i.e. cotton) around a human body with a constant temperature is numerically analysed with the model proposed. First the evaporation of water in clothing which contains saturated salt water is compared to that of pure water to assess how significant the influence of salt can become after several processes of the absorption and evaporation of sweat. Secondly the movement and accumulation of salt in clothing under cyclic sweating is investigated. It is concluded that the accumulated salt reduces the evaporation rate and the simultaneous latent heat loss at the exterior surface of the clothing, so the temperature decrease of the clothing due to sweat is reduced and the subsequent temperature increase is delayed. It is also shown that the salt distribution in the clothing extremely depends on the effective diffusion coefficient of salt, which ultimately influences the evaporation rate at the exterior surface of the clothing and the corresponding temperature and humidity in the clothing.
