Abstract

First of all, we examined the optimum relationships between a pipe radius (2r_o) and a pipe embedded pitch (p) about horizontal earth coil heat exchangers in consideration of the energy consumption to circulate the thermal medium liquid. The optimum values of p/2r_o are 12-18 for the continuous piping style and 6-10 for the trench piping style. Next, we execute the computer simulations on the space heating for a single house which is furnished with an earth-coupled heat pump system. The main result is that soil temperature at the depth of the embedded layer after heat extraction period recovers to the initial temperature by next winter with no heat recharge. Moreover, it was clarified that the most amount of heat extraction from soil is given from the difference between the amount of heat absorption from the ambience to the earth and the amount of heat emission from the earth to the outside. This result means that the shallow earth has the sufficient capacity as a heat source for heat pump.
