Abstract
In production facilities such as pharmaceutical plants and food processing plants, pure water, i.e., water that has been decontaminated, is supplied for use as service water in production and cleaning in order to prevent pollution in water-related activities. In a piping system for supplying pure water, thin-walled stainless steel tubes are employed by pressure and temperature. In recent years, junctions by mechanical-type pipe fitting, which allow thin-walled stainless steel tubes to be processed and connected at construction sites, have become mainstream in place of welding junctions by TIG. Gaskets used on seal points in mechanical-type pipe fitting employ O-rings made of synthetic rubber for reducing product weight and construction simplification. However, components that dissolve in water at locations where synthetic rubber is in contact with pure water are still not well understood. In this study, we applied an accelerated test to synthetic rubber used for a system supplying pure water. We clarified the components dissolved from synthetic rubber and estimated the possibility of using it as a gasket. Experimental results are as follows. 1. HNBR 1) The electric conductivity increased, and, in all temperature conditions, TOC and organic components were detected and there was little influence on the quality of the water. 2) Because the elution of the antioxidant occurred with the organic components, it was suggested that the water degradation had progressed. 2. Fluororubber 1) The carbon black was attached to a sample at 80℃. 2) At temperature of 60℃or more, the co-crosslinking agent was found in small quantities. 3) The soluble components from a sample does not affect quality of the water at 20℃. 4) It is highly unlikely that water quality is affected to any significant degree.
