Abstract

An urgent problem in the building sector is the need to reduce energy consumption. One of the measures designed to solve it is a "smart energy network". In this study, a tool for analyzing the hourly energy consumption of District Heating and Cooling (DHC), which is indispensable for the planning of a smart energy network, was developed. The tool was validated by comparing the measured and calculated energy consumptions for the existing DHC. Then, the effects of two measures for reducing the energy consumption of a DHC were calculated. These measures are (1)installation of a co-generation system (CGS) and high-efficiency heat sources (2)energy sharing with a neighboring high-performance DHC. Results showed that CGS and high-efficiency heat sources reduced the primary energy consumption of a DHC by 26.8%. Energy sharing with a neighboring high-performance DHC plant showed a 5.8% reduction in total energy consumption for the network.
