Description

“Dietary Guidelines for Japanese”, which was established in 2000, was intended to guide the general public to a healthy diet. However, it did not state exactly what and how much should be eaten. In July 2005, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries jointly released a new graphic symbol, “Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top”, that was intended to help with the choice of foods that would help to solve the major health problems listed in “Health Japan 21”.
The US Department of Agriculture in April 2005 also released an updated food guide called “MyPyramid” to communicate recommendations to consumers of the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans to make them healthier. This new guide takes a personalized approach and provides information and guidance via the Internet.
Although these two approaches are quite different, there are similarities in keeping the message simple, and aiming for a life-long behavior change by consumers. Nutrition and health professionals should seek and incorporate the best points of both guides to help Japanese people to make a healthy food choice for their daily diet.
