Abstract
Objective: The number of dietitians per municipality is very low, and only a limited number of dietitians implement various kinds of dietary projects. Therefore, it is important for municipal dietitians to bring out their potential abilities necessitating an increase in their self-efficacy. The objective of this study was to explore factors of self-efficacy in the performance of their duties.
Methods: All administrative dietitian council members (n = 393) who worked for municipalities in Gunma and 5 other neighboring prefectures were surveyed by mail; 233 (59.3%) dietitians responded.
Results: First, 26 items on confidence in duties of dietitians were used for exploratory factor analysis. Three factors were extracted, namely “project management,” “establishing a cooperative system,” and “general education and support.” Next, a “project management self-efficacy scale” was developed from 10 items that contributed highly to the “project management” factor. In multiple regression analysis (R2 = 0.509, p < 0.001), “positive experience of educational effect” (β = 0.237, p < 0.01) and “experience of independent project management” (β = 0.237, p < 0.01) were mainly associated with the “project management self-efficacy scale” score. In addition, “experience of independent implementation of education and support to adults” (β = 0.191, p < 0.05) was associated with “positive experience of educational effect” (R2 = 0.436, p < 0.001). Furthermore, “successful experience of project planning, implementation, and independent evaluation” (β = 0.390, p < 0.001) was mainly associated with “experience of independent project management” (R2 = 0.624, p < 0.001).
Conclusions: Improvement in project management self-efficacy and focus on the associated factors would be very important for the successful performance of municipal dietitians.
