This study was carried out to determine whether age influences the effect of vitamin K2 (menaquinone-4, MK-4) and vitamin D3 (D3) on bone mineralization.<BR>MK-4 (0.04g/100g of diet) was administered to young (5 weeks) and adult (33 weeks) female Wistar rats fed a diet containing D3 (100IU/100g of diet) or a diet deficient in D3 for one month. The serum calcium levels in both the young and the adult rats fed a D3-deficient diet were significantly lower. Although the serum calcium levels were significantly increased by MK-4 treatmemt in the adult rats fed a diet deficient in D3, MK-4 had no effect on the bone mineralization in the adult rats. In the young rats, however, the mineral weight and the calcium content of the tibia were significantly increased by MK-4 treatment.<BR>These findings suggest that the effect of MK-4 on bone mineralization is affected by the age of rats used in the experiment.
