We carried out a survey on daily physical activities in children with IDDM attending a summer camp and calculated the energy expenditure based on relative metabolic rates. We then analyzed the blood glucose level, and the relation between energy expenditure in excess of the specified energy intake and supplementation of food intake. We also evaluated the usefulness of the calorie counter.
The following results were obtained.
1) Energy obtained by subtracting the energy expenditure calculated by the time-study method from the specified energy intake from meals and between-meal snacks was-216kcal on the average or-10.8% of the specified energy intake. The energy expenditure was greater than the intake on the day of survey.
2) The mean energy intake from food supplementation was 293kcal or 15.0% of the specified energy intake and was substantially equivalent to the deficient amount.
3) The daily activity factor was 0.58 on the average, which was “medium” in the daily activity intensity classification.
4) The mean time spent in orienteering was 72 minutes. Total energy expenditure during activity was 360kcal (mean) and the energy activity 285kcal (mean), which were respectively equivalent to 17.9%(mean) and 14.1%(mean) of the specified energy intake.
5) Correlation coefficient of the ratio of the excessive energy expenditure to the specified energy intake and blood glucose level at 21: 00 (3 hours after dinner) was 0.620 (p<0.05).
6) Four children had the episodes of hypoglycemia at 21: 00, three hours after dinner. The ratio of their excessive energy expenditure to the specified intake was-18.7%(mean) and that of food supplementation 22.7%(mean), indicating that their total energy intake was substantially balanced.
7) Correlation coefficient of the energy expenditure measured by the calorie counter and that calculated from daily physical activities was 0.935 (p<0.001) and y=0.95x-41.1. The ratio of the former to the latter was 93.0% on the average.
