Abstract
Distributions of allophanic Andosols and nonallophanic Andosols in Tohoku District were determined. The 393 soil samples were divided into two groups according to the ratio of pyrophosphate extractable Al/acid oxalate extractable Al, the amounts of acid oxalate extractable Si and the clay content : allophanic Andosols and nonallophanic Andosols. Allophanic Andosols occupied 860,000 ha or 48% of total Andosols and distributed mainly in the regions having thick deposition of Holocene tephra and showing low rainfall or basaltic or pumiceous parent materials : southeast part of Aomori Pref., North part of Iwate Pref., east of Mt. Zao and Mt. Iwate, east part of Fukushima Pref., etc. On the other hand, nonallophanic Andosols occupied 940,000 ha or 52% of total Andosols and distributed in the regions having high rainfall or poor deposition of Holocene tephra : the Japan Sea side, a mountainous district, south part of Iwate Pref., northeast part of Miyagi Pref., etc. The proportions of nonallophanic Andosols to total Andosols in each prefecture are as follows : Aomori Pref. 30%., Akita Pref. 80%, Iwate Pref. 43%, Yamagata Pref. 100%, Miyagi Pref. 76% and Fukushima Pref. 42%.
