Abstract

The recovery from coated urea-N after contact with seedling roots in nursery boxes was very high. The effect of weather on absorption of coated urea-N and the recovery rate of rice plants in the non-tillage rice culture was investigated. The soil type was a gley soil with poor drainage. The results were as follows: 1) The relationship between accumulative release rate of total N from coated urea and cumulative soil temperature was similar in each year. 2) The accumulative release rate of total N from coated urea corresponded to the growth stage of rice plants in each year under different weather conditions. 3) In 1993 under low temperature conditions, the absorption from coated urea-N by each growth stage of rice was almost equal to that in 1992 under common condition. 4) In 1993, the absorption from soil N at the panicle formation stage and reduction division stage was lower than that in 1992. 5) The recovery from coated urea-N at the maturing stage of rice plants was 79% in 1992 and 81% in 1993. The recovery of rice plants from coated urea-N at the maturing stage was remarkable high and its variance was small. It is concluded that annual changes of absorption from coated urea-N are very small and the recovery rate of rice plants after single application of fertilizer in nursery boxes is remarkably high under different weather conditions.
