Description
The effect of long-term application of fritted trace elements fertilizer (FTE) on the accumulation of boron (B) in the soil, absorption and recovery rate of B by crops and residual effect of B after stopping FTE application were investigated with Light-colored Andosol, Andosol and Terrestrial Regosol. The B deficiency level in the soil was evaluated by yield, B content and B deficiency symptoms of crops. The yield in FTE plots was always higher than that of non FTE plots. Boron deficiency symptoms appeared within 2-4 years after stopping FTE application. The hot water soluble B content in the soil of FTE plots increased to about 1.0mg kg^<-1>. Boron did not accumulate excessively in the soil. It was suggested that hot water soluble B content in the soil was related to precipitation. It is necessary, therefore, to consider precipitation and leaching in applying FTE. After stopping FTE application, the hot water soluble B content in the soil quickly decreased within several years and slowly decreased afterwards. The B content in celery leaves after stopping FTE application decreased to that in non FTE plots within 4-5 years. The residual effect of B in the soil in long term FTE application plots seemed to last for only several years. The recovery rate of B in crops to which FTE was applied for 16 years was 9.9% in Light-colored Andosol, 10.6% in Andosol and 8.2% in Terrestrial Regosol, respectively. That in Andosol where FTE was applied for 20 years was 13.5%.
