Description

Natural rubber latex was vulcanized by irradiation to 20kGy in the presence of 5phr of n-butyl acrylate as a sensitizer. The aging properties of the vulcanizate were deteriorated by leaching with ammonium solution. This is due to the elution of natural antioxidants in the vulcanizate by water. Immobilization of natural antioxidants into vulcanizate was investigated to improve the aging properties. Immersion of the vulcanizate in organic solvent such as methanol, ethanol and i-propanol were found to be effective to improve the aging properties. Elution of nitrogen containing non-rubber components was reduced by the alcohol treatment of the vulcanizes. The modulus and hardness of the vulcanizates were increased by the treatment. Discoloration was observed in the vulcanizates immersed in alcohol. It was suggested that the natural antioxidants would be Hevein, a sulfur containing water soluble protein.
