Abstract

It is a trouble-some problem that thermal degradation of elastomers, as well as vapor discharge out of them are caused, if such elastomers are required to be endurable to use in such condition as high temperature and high vacuum, 10-3-10-4mmHg at 120°C. Actually as a result of our experiments on vulcanized NBR which was compounded for heat resistant use, slight discharge of vapor in vacuum-heating was shown, so that small portion of distillate was obtained by this treatment for a long time.<br>Therefore we had investigated the thermal resistance and discharging rates of vapors, on several thermal resistant compounds of NBR elastomer with different combination of plasticizers and vulcanizers each other, and moreover made an attempt to confirm such distillated vapor by means of infrared spectrogram in contrast with that of used additions (plasticizers, accelerators and vulcanizing agents), acrylonitrile monomer, thermal decomposed polyisobutylene and vacuum-heat distillates out of raw elastomer.<br>Thus obtained results are as follows:<br>Vacuum-heat distillates from the used vulcanizates consisted predominantly of dioctylphthalate (DOP), stearic acid and amine type of oxidation inhibitor contained inherently in raw elastomer. Particularly DOP and stearic acid as plasticizer or softener contribute remarkably to discharge of vapor from elastomers. At the condition of temperature and high vacuum as described above, it was found that distillates of low molecular members resulted in decomposition of acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer themselves did not emit, as well as that of DM, TT and Vulnoc R did not do so.
