Description
The concentrations of free radical reactive sites were detected for 3 carbon black samples of different origin, using benzoyl peroxide as a benzoyloxy radical source in pure CCl4 or CS2 at 25-45°.
Benzoic acid formed during these reactions showed the fact that the hydrogen atom combined with benzenoidal ring on the black surface was abstracted by benzoyloxy radical.
On the other hand, the number of benzoyloxy radical fixed on the black was determined by saponificating the resulting black after benzene extraction. For example, Spheron C (CC) had fixed 1.8×1020 benzoyloxy-radicals/g.
