Abstract

In order to study relations between properties of carbon black and natural rubber compound, we used twenty-three experimental blacks which had surface area covering from HAF to lower side of ISAF black and oil absorption from 0.7 to 1.3cc/g.
From our experimental results, we obtained the following conclusions:
1) Comparing oil absorption with surface area at an equal varying degree, oil absorption affected more substantially on properties of natural rubber compound in general than surface area. However, surface area had effect on dynamic properties such as resilience and heat-build up rather than oil absorption.
2) Generally, better processabilities were obtained by blacks which had higher oil absorption and lower surface area, but HAF-type black which would give better balanced vulcanizate properties to natural rubber compound, would be obtained from the range of slightly higher surface area and lower oil absorption level than a typical regular HAF black.
