Abstract

Among a series of metal salts of dithiocarbamate, cupric, zinc, selenium, tellurium, ferric, and lead salts are used as vulcanization accelerator but nickel ones as inhibitor to sun crack or antiozonant for styrenebutadiene rubber. The present paper is devoted primarily to a study on some differences among the chemical natures of these metal lic salts.
The effects of 15 sorts of the metal salts on scorch time and on ozone crack of styrene-butadiene rubber were tested. The ozone absorption abilities of the salts in carbon tetrachloride has been studied. To compare the rubber with the salts on the reactivity to ozone, lowering of the solution viscosity of the rubber ingrediated with or without the salts has been also studied. Magnetic susceptibility, absorption spectra of visible rays, ultraviolet rays and far infra-red rays of the salts were determined to secure some informations of their chemical bonds between sulfur atom and metal one. The conclusions drawn from these experiments were as follows.
(1) The salts having an inhibition ability to ozonization of rubber are selenium, tellurium and nickel ones but the first and the second can′t be employed as antiozonant because these salts act as vulcanization accelerator.
(2) The metals of the salts having an action of vulcanization accelerator seem to have sp, sp2 or sp3 hybridized orbital in sulfur-metal bond and these bonds are thought to be easily decomposed during the vulcanization process.
(3) On the other hand, the nickel salts have ds hybridized orbital, so the sulfur-nickel bond is thought to be not decomposed during the vulcanization process and the electron transfer to ozone may occur rather easy to produce a stable salt because the energy for π-π* transition is relatively low.
(4) The nickel salt of dithiocarbamate as antiozonant are assumed to have the chemical natures that they do not be decomposed by vulcanization and are able to react with a great deal of ozone rapidly, for examples, 4 to 10 moles of ozone were absorbed by one mole of the salts.
