Abstract

The reaction of 4, 4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) with the adsorbed water on the fillers and the amount of cousumed MDI by the fillers were studied, and the following results were obtained:
(a) In a polar solvent, the reactivity of MDI to water was high, but in a non-polar solvent, the reactivity was low. These results can be assumed from the fact that in the non-polar solvent, electron donative catalyst gave a little effect on the reaction of MDI and water, but electron withdrawing catalyst did some accelerating effects.
(b) In the polar solvent, the reactivity of MDI to the adsorbed water was high, and was almost equal to that in the case of the reaction to water. On the other hand, in the non-polar solvent, the reactivity of MDI to adsorbed water was low, and was almost equal to the reactivity to water, although electron withdrawing catalyst indicated a little effect.
(c) In the non-polar solvent, such fillers as carbon black, white carbon, clay and calcium carbonate consumed MDI.The amount of MDI consumption by silica was found to increase with an increasing temperature. This finding suggests the chemical reaction between them.
