Abstract
We studied the blending effects of cis 1.4 polybutadien and natural rubber in various blending rotios as 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 0/100. Blending methods studiedib were three processes as follows:
(1) raw polymers were blended on the mill, (2) filler pre-mixed polymers were blended on the mill, (3) raw polymers were blended in the solution. And the properties of these blended raw polymer, compounded polymer, and vulcanized polymer, i. e. intrinsic viscosity, Mooney viscosity, X-ray refraction, infrared absorption spectrum, phase separation in the solution, mechanical strength, and swelling in benzene, were measured.
The scission of cis-1.4 polybutadiene is not occured by mill process, and roll temperature must be kept as low as 40°C to ensure satisfactory operation when sheeting and blending of rubbers. However, the masticating effect of natural rubber at low temperature is markedly large and rubber viscosity is changeable. Therefore, it seems very difficult to obtain sufficiently homogeneous dispersion, and microheterogeneous dispersion is obtained even for the mixing of two rubbers which haue cis-type in the micro structures and comparatively similar molecular structures, if processing properties of these rubbers are different. Also, no signifficant difference is observed among three blending methods studied and rather similar states are obtained under the present mixing conditions. However, if examined in detail, superiority of properties of blended rubbers is in the order of solution method > batch-filler method > rolling method. Especially, for natural rubber, which is easily scission by shearing force of the rolls, it is better to use blending by filler-batch method which gives comparatively small fluctuation of experimental values.
Also, by changing blending ratios linear relationships are obtained between blending ratios and various values of physical strength or Mooney′s value.
