After the investigation mentioned in Report No. 1, another investigation was conducted on the iodine adsorption of various carbon blacks. By comparing the amount of iodine required to form a monolayer with an electron microscope and nitrogen adsorption surface area, we found that the area covered by one iodine molecule is about 40 square A. Thus the surface area assumed from iodine adsorption is related only to the external surface and has nothing to do with the internal surface which was conjectured from micro pores on the surface of carbon black particles. By removing the tarry matter from carbon black by benzene extraction, the amount of iodine adsorbed and heat of adsorption changed. We found that such changes depend upon quality of raw materials from which carbon black is made.<br>Further, we studied a simple method for process control. The most important factor in this method is the ratio of iodine to potassium iodide.
