The three fundamental properties of carbon blacks requisite for rubber reinforcement are structe, ureparticle size and surface chemistry.
According to Dr. C. W. Sweitzer′s “Oil droplet theory” the structure of carbon black is due to chemical fusion rather than physical attachment, with fused linkages varying all the way from thin necks to thick ones. These structure are made by random collisions of oil droplets in the process of carbon formation.
In order to determine the effect of carbon structure, we produced six kinds of blacks of various structure levels having equal fineness and similar surface chemistry, under specially controlled furnace operating conditions. Using a series of these carbon blacks, the role of carbon structure on the rubber compounds was investigated.
The result revealed that the increase in structure led to the following property changes,
Modulus higher Tensile, Elongation lower
Rebound lower Viscosity, Hardness higher
Scorch Time shorter Extruding properties better
Further, with increasing structure, abrasion resistance and dynamic properties reveal the same tendency as particle size decreases. We think, this is much important tendency for carbon black commercial production.
