抄録
The so-called hardness of rubber is extensively taken advantage of in the rubber industry, but it does not based upon the theory of elasticity. The shape of the penetrator in the JIS hardness tester is a truncated cone. The time scale of measurement is not clear. Then the authors attempted various experiments in the shapes of penetrators, time of measurements and the places where measurements should be done. From such investigation we found out many interesting results which show that JIS hardness has many demerits.<br>Particularly the conception of time must be made clear, and the shape of a penetrator must be cylindrical. Using an oscillating machine in order to take off the friction in the tester, the shear modulus of rubber could be calculated in conformity with the theory of elasticity. Therefore, the authors recommend to use shear modulus instead of hardness. The ratio of statical to dynamical shear moduli was found to possess its value between 1 and 1.2 experimentally. Also it was found out that dispersion of the value of deformation becomes larger in the place near to the periphery of a test piece.
