The Volcano Bay, situated on the south-west of Hokkaido, has a shape of an approximate circle with a diamater of about 50 km. The south-east side of the bay, about 27 km wide, is opened to the Pacific Ocean. The author investigated the annual change of the coastal current in the bay by the use of a simple type of a current-indicator made of a wooden plate, drift bottles and other oridinary current-meters. As a result of these investigations, it can be concluded that:
1. Over the whole region of the Volcano Bay, there exists a predominant circular coastal current which turns in clockwise direction in the period between May and August, and in the opposite direction from October to March.
2. The predominant circular current can be understood to be induced by the current outside the bay.
3. The oridinary coastal current is a superposition of the circular coastal current, the other flow induced by wind and waves, and a tidal current.
