From its behavior to acid and alkali solution, mercury in the muds of Minamata Bay, which have been found to be abundant in mercury originating from the industrial wastes, was suggested to exist in the form of sulfides and/or humates.<BR>The mechanism of removal of mercury from sea water was also investigated by the laboratory experiments, which suggested that mercury in the sea water supplied from the wastes was removed to the muds rapidly through a process of sorption by muddy substances.
