Abstract

Citing data from the Preliminary Data Report of CSK, the relationship between chlorinity (Cl) and the conservative phosphate concentration (Pc) was examined for waters with density of sigma-t 26.5 to 26.7. Examination was done first for waters collected off the north-eastern coast of the main island of Japan (Honshu) and second for waters off the east coast of the Philippine Islands. Off Honshu, a straight line was obtained as the relationship between Cl and Pc Off the Philippine Islands, some of points representing the properties of waters in the Cl-Pc diagram were found on the extension of, and others above, the above-mentioned straight line. The former type of waters occupy the north of the 8°N parallel and the latter the south. The 8°N parallel approximately coincides with the location of the boundary between the North Equatorial Current and the Equatorial Counter Current. These results indicate that waters of the North Equatorial Current region are the source water of the Kuroshio.
