In this report, the acoustic performance of conical expansion-chamber silencers has been examined with the aim of minimizing the aerodynamic noise of air flow in ventilation systems. The transmission loss equations for the several kinds of conical-type silencers were derived on the basis of plane wave and conical horn theory. The calculated results agreed fairly well with those of the experiments made at room temperature and without a flow. The charcateristics and levels of transmission loss of the silencers constructed with one conical chamber are similar to those of the cylindrical silencers in the low frequency region when these two types of silencers are nearly equal in their lengths and volumes. The transmission loss levels of the silencers which are constructed with two or more conical chambers connected in series by inserting each other are fairly large in the frequency ranges where the first resonance effect occurs. The noise levels generated by air flow in the conical types of silencers investigated were much smaller than those of the cylindrical types.
