Basic aspects of tonal rendition in hardcopy imaging are discussed with a stress on the difference in photographic and electronic approaches to this problem.<BR>Further, there are described two topical advances in electronic imaging systems as regards tonal rendition ; one being SMPTE 240M γ and the other the characteristics of Fuji-Xerox A color digital color printer.
