Abstract

Oxide superlattices possessing a periodic sequence of atomic and molecular scales and a controlled of growth direction can be utilized in the design and manifestation of artificial dielectric and magnetic properties. On the basis of this, we introduce an application employing epitaxial-growth techniques developed in oxide materials and applied to zinc oxide (ZnO). Wide-gap semiconductor ZnO possesses attractive characteristics that include optical, electric and magnetic properties. This material can be utilized to delineate new phenomena through surface nanostructures and quantum heterostructures. We demonstrate correlation between the growth direction and surface properties of ZnO, and discuss the growth mode at a heterointerface and quantum well structures, and magnetic ordering induced by cobalt-doping into ZnO for spin electronics.
