Description

Interest in workers’ mental health is on the rise in Japan. A recent study found that 55.7% of workers reported significant anxiety, worry, and stress in relation to their work and occupation, implying that 35.5 million workers experience these challenges. For many, much of this stress is caused by the quality and quantity of their work. In this paper, using Tokyo University Research Panel Survey data, we analyzed the work environment to buffer stress due to working hours to improve the mental health of regular workers. It was found that, in men, those who are able to determine the pace of work themselves experience a buffer effect against mental health disorders resulting from excessive working hours, and in women, workplaces where juniors are able to interact with their seniors in a relaxed atmosphere, a cushioning effect against poor mental health outcomes was seen. Furthermore, it has been found that in some workplaces, mutual assistance and cooperation can become factors preventing the deterioration of mental health in cases of long working hours.
