Description

In Japan, municipalities have conducted organized cancer screening to reduce the associated mortality rates.

Quality control indices of gastric cancer screening using gastrointestinal fluoroscopy in the Ibaraki prefecture has shown improvements over time. On the other hand, a statistical survey of colorectal cancer screening showed that mortality from colorectal cancer has been increasing, although colorectal cancer screening using the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) manifested a higher positive predictive value than gastric cancer screening.

In Mito, gastroendoscopy screening combined with the so-called ABC method, which assesses serum anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG antibody (H.pylori test) and serum pepsinogen (PG) levels simultaneously, has been carried out since 2011.

Mito city conducts gastric cancer screening biennially for people 51 years of age or older, following national guidelines. Participants can choose either gastrointestinal fluoroscopy or gastroendoscopy as the examination method. Furthermore, the city offers examination by the ABC method to people aged 40 to 50. The program to increase the detection rate of gastric cancer and H.pylori eradication is ongoing, using screening endoscopy and the ABC method.

In cancer screening targeting high-risk examinees selected by a simple method such as the ABC method or FIT, both high participation rates and accurate diagnosis by highly skilled gastroendoscopists are essential for the reduction of mortality rates from gastric and colorectal cancer.
