Abstract

Wave monitoring methods with aerial images from UAV have been recently studied to obtain mainly wave direction, celerity and bathymetry data through wave theory. In this study, stereo image analysis was applied to video images from two UAVs for reconstructing 3D shapes of water surfaces in surf zone. SURF were used for feature-based matching of two simultaneous video images. Bubbles entrained by wave breaking formed clear textures on water surfaces to be extracted as SURF feature points. Based on estimated camera geometries with results of the feature-based matching, dense 3D-point clouds were obtaind from the image pairs with 1-D Phase-Only-Correlation method. Although unnatural shapes were observed in some areas without clear textures, wave motions were successfully captured in the area with clear textures by the complex surface deformation and bubble entrainment by breaking waves.
