Abstract

Gear lapping technology that decreases the tooth surface roughness of a steel gear meshing with a nylon gear has been developed. The gear lapping machine to decrease the tooth surface roughness of the gas-carburized gear after fine particle shot peening is described in this paper. The gear tooth properties were measured after lapping and during the gear running tests. Consequently, the tooth surface roughness was decreased to about 1 μmRz through lapping, maintaining high hardness and compressive residual stress caused by shot peening. The endurance limit of lapped steel gears was improved by about 10 %, and reached about 2200 MPa in maximum Hertzian stress on the pitch point.
