Corresponding to micro topography, many kinds of soil types have developed in Tenpoku district, Hokkaido, and each soil type has different limiting factors in grass production. In Hamatonbetsu-Ponnitachinai area, the relationship between the soil types and the micro topography was studied to prepare a large-scale soil map, from which interpretative soil maps indicating soil amelioration procedures relevant to water deficiency in droughty periods, methods of organic matter application, and a selection guide to suitable grasses were compiled. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Six soil types distributed practically corresponding to the altitude are identified in the surveyed area: Gravelly Acid Brown Forest soils (Bfn-1), Typic Acid Brown Forest soils (Bfn-2), Aerie Pseudogleys (Bfg), Typic Pseudogleys (Pgn), Pseudogleys with Dark Epipedon (Pgd), and Lowmoor Peat soils (Lp). 2. Limiting factors for grass production differ in different soil types. Available water capacity in rooting zones varies Bfn-1, 2 > Pgd > Bfg > Pgn, macro pores in subsoils Bfn-1, 2 > Pgn ≧ Bfg> Pgd, and soil nitrogen availability estimated by the use of several methods Bfn>1, 2>Bfg>Pgn. 3. Field experiments have shown that effects of barnyard manure application to grass growth are more significant in Pgn than in Bfn, especially in droughty years, elongation of grass roots into subsoils being stimulated by the manure application in Pgn. Deep ploughing accompanied by application of a large amount of barnyard manure has a significant effect in droughty years, whereas deep ploughing without manure application has little beneficial effect to timothy.
