Abstract

Based on GIS and GPS, the Soil Survey Support System was developed to use soil information in a soil map promptly and effectively in field conditions. The structure and functions of the system are summarized as follows. 1) The system consists of a light-weighted notebook-sized personal computer and DGPS including a satellite electric wave receiver with antenna and an antenna for a multiple frequency modulation broadcasting for the position correction. Software for the system was developed based on Visual-C language, so as to work with Windows 95 and 98. 2) A soil map and interpretation map of a requested area are in real time displayed in a needed scale. A profile description and physico-chemical properties are retrieved on request and displayed on the computer screen. Interpretation maps be easily and quickly prepared and displayed in terms of such soil characteristics as effective soil depth, the soil texture, depth of gravelly layer, phosphorus fixation capacity, moisture regime (paddy field) and drainage condition (paddy field). 3) The reproducibility of positioning with DGPS installed in the system was tested with 16 sites. Positioning error was less than 10m and found to be accurate enough to use in field conditions. The error was slightly larger in hilly and mountains areas than in the plains.
